The University of the Free State is inviting applicants to apply for the Lab assistant vacancy for 2021.

Assumption of duties:

  • As soon as possible.

Salary:

  • The annual remuneration package, including benefits is: R187 424.42 – R314 228.57 depending on the budget available for the position, relevant work experience and qualifications.

Requirements:

A detailed curriculum vitae and cover letter (please note that the first three (3) referees on your CV will be contacted with regard to reference checking);
• Certified copies (not older than 6 months) of all academic records;
• Certified copies (not older than 6 months) of qualifications (please provide the SAQA accreditation in the case of foreign qualifications);
• A certified copy (not older than 6 months) of your identity document (ID);
• Proof of registration with a Professional Body (if applicable);
• A copy of your driver’s license (if applicable).
• A service record of your current employer / last employer.

Duties and responsibilities:

• Milling of plants.
• Perform extractions of plant materials.
• Perform thin layer & column chromatography.
• Perform qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analysis.
• Perform rotary evaporation/freeze drying and spray drying.
• Perform solid phase extractions.
• Perform purification and isolations.
• Do basic HPLC analysis.
• Participate in the current stability testing and analysis of formulations.
• Assist in cell culture and analytical laboratories.

Inherent requirements:

• Diploma on NQF level 6 in basic natural sciences (Biotechnology or Pharmacology or Biochemistry).
• Must have had a recent exposure in a Pharmacology laboratory, including techniques and training.
• Basic training in medicinal plants biochemistry or plant biotechnology.

Recommendations:

• A BSc degree on NQF level 7 in basic natural sciences (Biotechnology or Pharmacology or Biochemistry).
• Exposure or recent exposure to pharmacology research techniques and       equipment.
• Work experience in a pharmacology laboratory or biochemistry laboratory.
• Experience in IKS, Pharmacology training exposure and plant research experience.
