Sappi Ngodwana Mill requires a TECHNICAL TRAINING OFFICER to to conduct accredited electrical training for apprentices, artisans and skilled engineering employees.

To conduct unaccredited electrical short courses for general worker skills up-liftment and the local communities around Sappi operations

This role reports to: Learning Manager

The main responsibilities of this job are:

  • Prepare training demand schedules to cover all the electrical courses offered in the centre – community short courses, community apprenticeship programmes, mill apprenticeships and mill technical training including cover trade test preparation
  • Sign off the documents that need to be submitted to the SETA for apprentice registrations
  • Prepare progress reports for all trainees and sign off each element of their training as they progress through the modules, using the prescribed formats
  • Develop training material as required for electrical programmes in line with trade requirements as well as to ensure that trainees are plant-ready when they complete the programme
  • Ensure that training materials meet instructional design standards, contain adequate opportunities for practical’s and with the requisite formative and summative assessments
  • Facilitate classroom and practical training for electrical apprentices and mill employees
  • Identify local projects that apprentices can complete to ensure that they get the practical experience they need. Work with mill engineering teams to obtain the correct authorisation and supervision for the work to be completed
  • Monitor the progress and provide one-on-one coaching to the electrical apprentices onsite, as well as mill contracted apprentices
  • Provide additional support to apprentices who are struggling with course material or with practical elements
  • Maintain discipline among the trainees and monitor their behaviour against the Skills Centre’s code of conduct. Ensure that inappropriate behaviour is addressed immediately
  • Ensure that all required documents are properly completed and stored
  • Do stock control of electrical consumables used in the training centre and ensure timely orders of new stock, while following the correct procurement processes
  • Maximise the re-use of consumables where possible to minimise the cost impact

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Grade 12 with Maths (not Maths Literacy) and Science
  • Trade tested qualified Electrician
  • 3 years’ experience as an artisan in a manufacturing environment
  • Qualification as an assessor and or moderator would be advantageous
  • Experience as a training facilitator would be advantageous
