Position Description:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mechatronics Intern within the Logistics Division’s Engineering Team. The Mechatronics function within the Engineering Team drives the technological heartbeat of the Distribution Centres which are central to the TFG’s Supply Chain.

If you are starting out in the Electrical/Mechatronics Engineering and are passionate about technology, continuously learning and problem solving and have an interest in being part of the 4th Industrial Revolution then this internship if for you.

The incumbent’s roles and responsibilities will include, but not be limited to the following at an introductory level:

  • First Line Support on all Distribution Centre Systems
  • Supporting Engineering Team in Project Implementations
  • Project Management of installations and improvements and other initiatives related to business requirements
  • Automation Systems Integration and support (PLC’s, fieldbus, switchgear and sensors)
  • Materials Handling System Support (ZPA conveyors, drives and sortation systems)
  • Integration and support of Barcode scanning and printing systems
  • Repairs and refurbishment to Mobile Computers and Label Printers and applicators
  • Continuous improvement through problem identification and solution design and implementation
  • Supporting Linux and Unix based applications
  • Participate in Automation Strategy related projects including RFID implementation
  • IT Systems integration with ERP Systems and Databases
  • Investigation into new technologies related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution as applicable to the overall Retail Business environment.
  • Providing world class service levels to Distribution Centres
  • Researching and where applicable prototyping new ideas that can assist with improving overall Distribution Centre efficiency.

  • On the job training where required to equip the incumbent with the skills to perform the required duties
  • A Pioneering RFID (4IR) Project in the Retail Sector
  • Research and Development opportunities
  • Software Development and IT ( Database, Unix, Linux and Windows Server)
  • An environment that overlaps business and technical requirements and the opportunity to not just be technical but develop an understand of how technology integrates into the business domain
  • Leading vendors and OEM’s in the Automation and Mobility industry and associated networking opportunities
  • Collaboration and Project Management

To apply for this position, you need:

  • Studying in the National Diploma Programmes in Electrical or Mechatronics Engineering at a minimum
  • Eligible for doing Practical’s (P1 &P2) if still in the process of studying towards the National Diploma otherwise eligible for a yearlong internship.
  • Currently reside in Cape Town or willing to work in Cape Town
  • Possess a valid Code B or higher drivers licence
  • An eye for detail and exceptional organisational skills
  • Excellent communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to build and maintain healthy relationships
  • To be self-motivated, and take responsibility for your own development
  • To be a team player
  • To be proactive
  • A good working knowledge of MS Word and Excel

 The ideal candidate (not essential but advantageous):

  • Has had hands on exposure and experience with PLC’s and programming in Ladder Logic and/or Structured Text
  • Is comfortable reading wiring diagrams
  • Is someone who investigates technology and has in interest in continuously learning beyond the classroom setting
  • Enjoys tinkering with electronics and embedded systems (Arduino, Microcontrollers, Raspberry Pi etc)
  • Can program in one of the following C++, Python, C# or Java
  • Has a working knowledge of Full stack Web Development
  • Has had exposure to LabView
  • Has basic Linux command line skills
